Baby steps

It has been quiet at my building site as you may have noticed. Typical January. Though days are getting longer, it seems very difficult to get anything done after the day job. Hibernation seems to be a fact among us northerners...
Anyway, some little progress has happened here. I have been working with the balcony doors and slowly but surely they are getting ready. In this picture the doors are still unfinished, because I haven't made up my mind if five glasses are too much or not. Any opinions, anybody?
In my first post this year I told about my idea for the balcony banisters. Before Christmas I had a chat with one of the blacksmiths at the local Christmas market and I asked if he could think of making a pair of miniature cast iron balusters for a miniature house. For his credit he didn't take me as a village idiot (or did not show his thoughts at least), but when I told my idea to our miniature building instructor, he seemed to think I'm an idiot. I knew it! Once you tell him about an (miniature) idea and maybe hint that there could be a shortcut to reach the result, you find yourself doing the work yourself! Am I going to be a blacksmith now, or is there a second best way to make those balusters? I don't know, but I know now that I'm the one who's going to make them!

Winter suprised again!

What can I say? Once again winter came to Helsinki against all my wishes and as I took Otto for a walk this afternoon, I made a spontaneous triple salkow (without ice skates) only after a few steps! OUCH!
The pavement in front of Mr and Mrs Oiva's house is fortunately safe, but as you can see, there's some snow in their neighbourhood too.  As you may notice, I haven't changed the colour of their front door, and I won't, but now I'm trying to make up my mind about the colour of the door frame! Red, black, grey or white? Now, there's a question!

Uuden vuoden lupauksia?

Lueskelin eilen muutamia entuudestaan seuraamiani, sekä joitakin uusia nukkekotiblogeja, ja ihailin jälleen kerran ihmisten luovuutta. Huomasin, että monet olivat myös laatineet pitkät listat tänä vuonna toteutettavista töistä.

Jotkut listat olivat niin pitkiä, että aloin salaa epäillä a) kirjoittajien todellisuudentajua, tai b) että joillakin vain on enemmän tunteja vuorokaudessa kuin allekirjoittaneella! 

Itseni tuntien en tehnyt yhtäkään uuden vuoden lupausta, mutta saattaisin tässä ja nyt luvata viimeisteleväni parvekkeen lattialaattojen saumauksen. Ja nyt kun vauhtiin pääsin, taidan luvata viimeistellä myös parvekkeen pariovet, sekä niiden molemmin puolin olevat ikkunat.

Ensin ajattelin jättää ikkunapokat tuollaiseksi, kuin tuo vasemmalla oleva. Teipattuani pokat paikoilleen tajusin , että ikkunat ovat aivan liian suuret verrattuna alaosan vastaaviin. Keskipalkki ikkunaan auttaa kummasti tässä kohtaa, siispä tiedossa on sahaamista ja maalaamista näin ensi alkuun...

Parvekkeen ovet kaipaavat myös jotain, joten taidan lisätä niihin parit poikkilistat (sahaamista ja maalaamista, jep)!

Olen pitkään vääntänyt itseni kanssa kättä ulko-oven väristä. Vuosi sitten halusin ehdottomasti punaisen oven, mutta toisaalta välillä vähän askarruttaa. Punainen vai musta? Kas siinäpä pulma! Tavallaan musta olisi varma valinta, mutta tuleeko julkisivusta sitten 'liian harmooninen'? Voi itku näitä valinnan vaikeuksia!!!

Kävin joulun alla Tuomaan markkinoilla jututtamassa erästä seppää. Kovasti haluaisin takorautakaiteet parvekkeelleni ja ihmeekseni en ainakaan heti tullut tyrmätyksi toiveineni. Sovimme, että lähetän hänelle parvekkeen mitat ja jos seppä todella innostuu, saan paluupostissa mahdollisesti kustannusarvion. Täytynee lotota ahkerasti, sillä en usko kaiteiden irtoavan kovin huokeasti! Toisaalta, kun miniajatus alkaa kyteä pääkopassa,on vaikeaa ajatella suunnitelmaa B. Varsinkin, kun sellaista ei ole!

No, tuossapa tuli liuta lupauksia ja toiveita näin tammikuun alkuun, joten lopuksi pari kiitosta.

It's getting there

Today was this autumn's last workshop evening and oh dear, oh dear, I had the trunk of the car full of different parts of  my house when I drove home. Largest space took the attic / tin roof, which at the moment, is my pride and joy! I've worked countless hours at it, mostly hated my choice, but in the end, I am very pleased with the result. I even gave up my principles and used (two bottles) of spray paint to finish the job. Nearly puked tonight because the smell of the paint, but it was worth it, I think!

Smutch is black!

I have never had a priviledge to work as a chimney sweeper, so I've got no idea how the top of a chimney looks like. Here is my vision. It was very liberating to use black paint and not to worry about any stains! I might even paint an other coat just for fun!

Chimneys

Hi there! In case you couldn't quess, I've been building chumneys for past few days. On the top part of these chimneys you can still see some glued semolina, which I'm goin to paint grayish black as concrete is. The grout became a bit too white, though I added some gray pigment with it, but never mind! I'll try to make both grout and tiles look old and worn out and, hurrah!!! I'll get to paint the tubes inside black! That shouldn't be too difficult? The lower parts of the chimneys I'm going to cover with the same tin as the roof. A touch of matt black paint and that's it!
